Lost your Duolingo streak? Here's what you can still try.

What Streak Repair and Streak Freeze can – and cannot – do, plus the case for a habit with nothing in it to lose.

The flame is gone. The number under it says one, which yesterday said forty, or four hundred, or whatever the real number was before this morning. You are here because you typed some version of “lost my duolingo streak” into a search bar, probably before coffee, and you would like it back.

It might come back, but the answer now depends on what Duolingo offers your account. A Streak Freeze only helps before the missed day, and the June 2026 revival campaign is over. Here is what to check now, before we get to the part where Wit makes the case for skipping the whole apparatus.

How to actually get it back

  1. Check the streak screen when you reopen Duolingo. If your account is eligible for a repair or earn-back offer, the app will show it there. The price, timing and challenge can vary, so the offer on your account is the useful answer.
  2. A Streak Freeze prevents a loss; it does not reverse one. It must already be equipped when the missed day happens. Duolingo describes it as insurance applied in advance.
  3. If you completed a lesson and the streak still broke, report it. That is a possible account, sync or service problem rather than an ordinary missed day. Use the Duolingo Help Center.
  4. The June 2026 revival event has ended. Eligible learners with a previous streak of at least 30 days could restore it by completing three lessons in one sitting. Duolingo limited the offer to the month of June, so it is not a current recovery method.

01 · Feelings, Precisely

Wit adj.

crestfallen

KREST-faw-lun

Suddenly sad and disappointed, in a way others can see.

The kid checked the mailbox and looked crestfallen again.

There is a particular look that goes with opening the app and finding the number wrong. Not devastation – nothing was actually lost, in the sense that matters – but something that reads as devastation to whoever is watching you check.

That is the word for it: crestfallen. It is not usually what you would call your own face; it is what a friend says about your face, a beat before you have explained anything. The word carries a little fondness for that – for the fact that the losing side of a game this small still shows up on someone’s expression.

A streak measures how much attention you paid it, not how many words stuck.

Feelings, Precisely is full of words aimed at the moment rather than the person feeling it. More of them are in the feeling words worth knowing.

02 · Write It Sharper

Wit adj.

moot

MOOT

No longer worth discussing, because it can't change anything now.

That's moot now, they picked the other hotel this morning.

By now you have probably also had the other argument, the one with yourself, about whether this was really your fault. Did you actually skip a day, or did the app just not credit the lesson you did? It is a fair question, and also, functionally, a moot one.

Moot does not mean unimportant. It means the discussion no longer changes the outcome, which is a narrower, more useful claim. Whichever of the fixes above applies to you applies regardless of who is to blame – so the argument can end there.

03 · Conversation Moves

Wit phr.

to be fair

Adds a point in favor of the side being criticized.

The landlord is slow, but to be fair, he did fix the heating on a Sunday.

To be fair to Duolingo: this is a deliberate habit mechanic, not a trick. A visible, unbroken count gives people a reason to return daily. The company did not invent the instinct to protect a number; it built the product around it.

It has built a fair amount of shop, too – freezes, repairs, a subscriber tier, more of the same waiting the longer a streak runs. None of that is a criticism of the people who like it. It is just a lot of infrastructure standing on top of one number.

04 · Idioms People Actually Say

Wit idm.

a clean slate

A fresh start with no past mistakes counted against someone.

The new job felt like a clean slate after a rough year.

Wit is built on the opposite bet: there is nothing in it that can do to you what a streak just did. No flame to lose, because there is no flame – just three counters, met, kept, and learned, that only ever move in one direction. Miss a week and nothing resets. The word waiting on your Home Screen tomorrow is the same one that would have been there anyway.

You will not need a clean slate, because nothing was held against you while you were away. That is not a workaround for the feeling a broken streak produces. It is what happens when the app was never built to produce that feeling in the first place – which is also, more or less, why a clean slate gets asked for so often and handed out so rarely.

If you want your streak back, check the offer on your account and report a genuine error. If neither applies, Duolingo may not currently offer a way to restore it. If you are just tired of the apparatus around the streak, that is a different problem – and the one Wit was built to skip. One word a day, kept if you liked it, off the list only once you have actually learned it. Nothing to protect, so nothing to lose.

One word on your Home Screen every morning.
